The life of Irene (Schlotterback) Mart

Funeral services for Mary Irene Mart, 95, of Knoxville, who died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at her home, were held Thursday, Feb. 14, at Evans-McCleery Funeral Home in Knoxville.


She was born Feb. 2, 1907, in Knoxville, the daughter of Clyde M. and Mary Courtney Schlotterback. She graduated from Knoxville High School in 1925.

She married Dwight B. Mart on Feb. 3, 1926, in Knoxville. She lived in Knoxville her entire life. In addition to being a mother and homemaker, she worked as a clerk for several Knoxville stores. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years.

She served on many committees and was awarded a U.M.W. Recognition Pin in 1972. She was also a member of Sarah Circle. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dwight; and three brothers, Dwight, Robert and Merle.

According to them..."Lucille Schlotterback, member of the 1927 Newhall girls' high school state championship basketball team was born November 13, 1910, in Newhall, Iowa.  She was raised on a farm located near the extended family of Schlotterback cousins in Benton County.  She was a sophomore on the Newhall high school basketball team that won the state championship in 1927.  Her cousins Luella Gardemann and Melba Gardemann, were forwards on the team. Schlotterback graduated from Newhall High School in 1929."
